I'd highly recommend reading Tim Keller's Making Sense of God. He's a bright guy that writes occasionally for the NYT, and is very thoughtful. He traces the development of cultural ideals throughout history and shows (convincingly I think) how Christianity is the most consistent and satisfying belief system.
